"Oh well, it's too late, my host body mutates. My head spins, my neck breaks, I love a self sabotage."

It’s been a rough couple of weeks. I was hit with Shingles that completely obliterated my energy levels for the entire course of the anti-virals. Now that the bottle is empty, the course completed, back to business, I hope. I will tell you that I was actually devastated being diagnosed with what my mind told me was an “elderly” malady. I am fast-approaching the half-century mark of my life but never did I feel older than sitting on that paper-covered (and oddly noisy) exam table and being told I had Shingles. Fortunately, a round of the largest pills I’ve ever consumed would get me back in the game, and because they were internal, not contagious. And my doctor is actually the sweetest, most compassionate person and commented that yes, young people get it too. Thanks doc!

So back to regularly scheduled and cootie-free programming!

I have spent a lot of time with my dehydrator, testing out new combos and playing a game of “Will It Dehydrate?” And so far, yes, everything has done better than expected. I’ve done bell peppers, jalapeños, apples, bananas, pineapples, mango-pineapple fruit leathers, and quail eggs (although these were nauseating to smell as I am allergic and my body reminded me that they are a no-no food).

The thing that brings me joy is when my treats get prime real estate on the kitchen counter, clear canisters with the cork lids fully displaying my efforts. And then they get eaten, down to the desiccant packet. That is totally satisfying as a maker, to know your food is literally good enough to devour. Ate, no crumbs left.

Outside the kitchen, we are planning our lil container garden, a little later than I wanted but “some is better than none” and every new skill is something to harvest and share with others. I want to do peppers, pickling cucumbers, watermelon, pumpkin and/or squash, tomatoes, lemon balm, potatoes, carrots, and a few containers of pollinator attractors to do my part in helping the bees. I just need to actually get in there and just do it instead of worrying if I have the “perfect” containers, fancy soil, all that stuff. Maybe putting it in public print will push me to the nursery and over to Lowe's this weekend.

The key to it all is to keep the coooties away so I can do all the stuff my ridiculous brain is convinced I have time for.
